Enteroviruses: Symptoms and Prevention Tips

The word enterovirus has been cropping up a great deal in the news lately as a particularly potent variety has crept across the Midwest and then throughout the rest of the country. In actuality, enteroviruses are quite common, causing many ailments from bad head colds to hepatitis and polio. These viruses usually enter through the gastrointestinal system and make their way to the nervous system.
The enterovirus that has been causing most of the alarm lately, however, is Enterovirus EV-D68, which has been classified by the CDC as a non-polio enterovirus. This virus, which is usually not deadly, mainly attacks the respiratory system and has been affecting mostly children. Symptoms to be expected with this disease are listed below.
  • The first symptoms commonly include sneezing, coughing and sniffles and generally resemble the symptoms of a head cold.
  • The individual may begin to experience aching muscles and fever, similar to what one could expect from a case of influenza.
  • A rash may sometimes accompany this virus.
  • If the disease worsens, it may lead to more severe respiratory issues, such as wheezing and difficulty breathing.
Prevention is the best form of medicine. People can avoid getting this virus by being careful of what they touch, washing their hands often, disinfecting children’s toys and frequently used surfaces and being particularly careful with cleanliness when changing babies’ diapers. It’s also important to get adequate rest and eat a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals.
Enterovirus D68 can be treated. Below are some treatment methods that may be expected.
  • Mild cases may require little more than rest at home and over-the-counter medications. Acetaminophen may help alleviate pain and reduce temperature. However, parents should remember that children should not take aspirin or medications containing aspirin.
  • More severe cases may require hospital stays. As the lungs become increasingly affected, people may need special breathing treatments. However, there are no drugs that specifically treat this virus.
